Next weekend brings us to the final Monoposto event for the 2024 season, the SVRA COTA SpeedTour. At this point only three of our eleven class championships have been decided. Looking at the entry list there definitely could be changes in the current standings by the weekend’s conclusion.
In addition to offering the Monoposto championship final races, the weekend also features one of the final races in this year’s Continental Championship Formula B Reunion. (The other final Reunion race is this same weekend at Thunderhill Raceway Park with CSRG.)
The latest entry list shows 34 classic cars (14 FVs!) and 25 wings and slicks cars entered. Clearly enough for some good to wheel to wheel racing for everyone.
SVRA at Circuit of the Americas has been the final event on the Monoposto schedule each year since 2013 because of its location and the fact that COTA is a fun and challenging track to drive. From the wide uphill entry/narrow downhill exit of turn 1 through the very rapid sequence of the esses to the flat out “hang on for dear life” sweeper known formally as turns 16/17/18, the track offers classic challenges. Many of the corner sequences have been modeled on classic tracks like Silverstone, Interlagos, Hockenheim and Istanbul. The track surface has received lots of attention since Monoposto’s visit last year. A combination of reprofiling and repaving this past year has resulted in a track surface that no longer has undulations and bumps that made car setup a real challenge. There is still a slight bump through turn 2 and another at turn 3, the entry to the esses, but the uneven surfaces in the braking areas and on the back straight are gone.
The long-term weather forecast looks good so, except for some am showers, we should have a fine time at the Monoposto season finale.
Since the total car entry list for event is so large and the paddocks are widely spread apart there will be no Monoposto party. If you’d like to chat or lobby for next year’s schedule, please drop by my area in the paddock (usually near the Media Center) and say hello.
